Q: What does ISO Mean?
Your insurance rate can be affected by many different factors. The Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating is one of those factors. ISO collects information on fire protection efforts in communities throughout the United States. In each of those communities, ISO analyzes the relevant data using a Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS).
ISO assigns a Public Protection Classification form 1 to 10. Class 1 generally represents superior property fire protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area's fire suppression programs doesn't meet ISO's minimum criteria.
When ISO develops a single Public Protection Classification (PPC) for a community, all community properties receive that classification. However, in our community, ISPO developed a split classification, which was revised in 2013 to reflect the risk of loss more precisely. The first number refers to the classification of properties within 5 road miles of a fire station and within 1,000 feet of accreditable water supply. The second number, with either X or Y designation, applies to properties within 5 road miles of of the fire station buy beyond 1,00 feet of a creditable water supply. ISPO generally assigns Class 10 to properties beyond 5 road miles.
